A couple of weeks ago I spotted a bull moose out in the field. Quickly grabbing the camera I made a few images while hand holding the 300mm lens. He didn’t seem bothered, so I quietly started setting up the tripod and attached the 500mm to hopefully get a better view of this nice looking bull. He was easily over a hundred yards away. As I walked my gear to the other side of the gravel road the bull started backing up. Shoot! I started talking to him letting him know I meant him no harm. This is not an unusual reaction for me, and I should note that Tom has reminded me many times that I’m not actually living in a Disney movie. To my surprise another bull stood up and began walking toward the original subject in my viewfinder. Now that was cool! Even better, was that for a few moments the two aligned nicely for this image.

Third Time’s a Charm
See the same wolf a little farther down the road walking along a gravel driveway, pull over, turn off truck, grab keys, accidentally hit the panic button, wolf takes off…
Really?
Get out of the truck, walk down the road, come across a weeded field, stand on my tippy toes to get a better look and I see him peering over the weeds at me. Nine frames a second, and one shot semi turns out…Always awesome to see a wild wolf!
Memories Made
Often measured by lifespans and events, we cherish the times that make a significant impact on our lives. Last night we found out that our Katy had bone cancer. Quickly learning that this is a painful disease, we made the decision to say goodbye this morning. Ten great, fun-filled years with this big dog! How could we ask for more?
For some reason we got into the habit of naming our dogs after Steely Dan songs. Aja was one of our beagles, then came Katy, and we still have our three year old Josie with us!
While taking Aja to the pet store one Saturday afternoon, we came upon a pop up kennel that had puppies for sale. They were all being fostered by St. Francis of Assisi. A few weeks before we had been to a shelter checking out some other pooches, but none of them seemed to like our Aja.
As I peeked into this pop up kennel, two pups were inside, and the brindle-faced one was checking out Aja. I spent some time petting her, and got to take her for a walk. I called Tom to have him come see, and within two hours the decision was made. “Joy” as her name tag said, would be coming home with us!
It didn’t take long for her to make herself at home on the couch!
Over the years we learned she loved hiking, swimming, camping, and of course birthday parties! Opening presents was her absolute favorite, right beside dashing to the kitchen when she heard a butter wrapper, a can of pumpkin being opened, or the sound of the Skippy jar coming out of the cupboard!
She travelled the country with me for many years!
There was always a place for all of her stuff!
She saw grizzlies, bison, wolves, waterfalls, canyons and the ocean!
Tasting the salt water never got old!
If you have a fun memory of Katy we’d love to read about it in the comment section! She brought us ten solid years of memories and for that, we are grateful!
Prepping
Having so much fun digging through images as I prepare for this weekend’s Night Sky Photography Workshop at The International Wolf Center in Ely, Minnesota!
This photograph showing the Pioneer Mine under a star-filled sky also includes a view of the lunar eclipse that happened this past October.
