Memories Made

Often measured by lifespans and events, we cherish the times that make a significant impact on our lives. Last night we found out that our Katy had bone cancer. Quickly learning that this is a painful disease, we made the decision to say goodbye this morning. Ten great, fun-filled years with this big dog! How could we ask for more?

For some reason we got into the habit of naming our dogs after Steely Dan songs. Aja was one of our beagles, then came Katy, and we still have our three year old Josie with us!

While taking Aja to the pet store one Saturday afternoon, we came upon a pop up kennel that had puppies for sale. They were all being fostered by St. Francis of Assisi. A few weeks before we had been to a shelter checking out some other pooches, but none of them seemed to like our Aja.

As I peeked into this pop up kennel, two pups were inside, and the brindle-faced one was checking out Aja. I spent some time petting her, and got to take her for a walk. I called Tom to have him come see, and within two hours the decision was made. “Joy” as her name tag said, would be coming home with us!

It didn’t take long for her to make herself at home on the couch!

Over the years we learned she loved hiking, swimming, camping, and of course birthday parties! Opening presents was her absolute favorite, right beside dashing to the kitchen when she heard a butter wrapper, a can of pumpkin being opened, or the sound of the Skippy jar coming out of the cupboard!

Celestial Grandeur

The evening started out with many familiar faces gathering for the Ely Field Naturalists summer potluck at Lucky Boy Farm. The food was delicious, and catching up with folks was fabulous! This was followed by a heart-warming musical performance by our friend Jerry Vandiver from Nashville, Tennessee. Just before the concert came to an end, a Yellow Alert for auroras popped up on my phone. I’ll admit to packing it up quickly and saying my goodbyes in haste as I made my way to the truck which was already loaded with camera gear and supplies for staying out into the wee hours of the morning.

Driving toward a familiar location, there were very bright colorful curtains of light high above the tree line. You can see in this first image how strong the breeze was. The shutter was open for 13 seconds, which often will keep most movement to a minimum. It was 9:37 and just at the end of Nautical Twilight, making it barely bright enough outside to see without using some other light source.

The Perseid Meteor Shower is coming to an end, but there were still plenty of shooting stars to cause ooos and ahhs throughout the night! As the sky grew darker, the clouds began to move in.

IMG_8710-copy

The parking lot was now full, and the entire northern horizon was dancing up a storm!

IMG_8767-copy

Shortly after 10:30 a proton arc became visible just east of the aurora show.

IMG_8828-copy

Directly across from it, we could see another piece of the arc lighting up the sky.

IMG_8838-copy

Within minutes the two pieces seemed to join together, creating an X with the Milky Way.

IMG_8859-copy

It really was a sight to behold. As described to me by my meteorologist friend Bob Conzemius, a proton arc is basically a band of auroras caused by protons, whereas most auroras are caused by electrons.

As the night went on, more and more friendly faces joined in on the fun of watching the night sky in action! Admittedly it is difficult to stand still for a 25 second exposure, but I think this group did pretty darn good!

IMG_8890-copy

If you look closely you can see two meteors zipping across the Milky Way in this image.

IMG_8893-copy

As the lights died down, people began to leave the area. I stopped at a few other locations as I began the trek home. Passing a small clearing, I swore I could see the show start back up again. It probably comes as no shock that I turned around and went out to the lake. It was 1 am and I arrived just in time to pick up some fantastic movement and colorful structure before the thunderstorm took over the sky.

Introducing Root River Photography’s Teddy Bear Collection!

TeddyBearSignageSE3A8422-copy
Working in Montana and Wyoming for the past few weeks has brought joy and peace to my life. The mountains make me feel alive and breathing the same air as the grizzly bear fills my soul! For me, there is no place else like it!
This spring there were more bear cubs (both black and grizzly) than I have encountered in the past. There were moments of laughter as silliness played out before my eyes; along with times of simple observation. Watching cubs of the year is night and day to watching one year olds. The spring cubs play and fight and just generally have a good time, while the yearlings know they need to eat to survive. Not that they don’t all do cute things every once in a while, but those tiny COY really know how to put on a show!
Wanting to share a vast assortment of cubby images, I am in the process of creating a brand new collection. Besides being available online, I will be premiering the collection at the Blueberry Arts Festival in Ely, Minnesota the weekend of July 24th, 25th & 26th!
Here are a few samples that I’ve begun to process.

Hungry Baby

Did you see the cute little owl that was posted on facebook recently? Here is a close up of the wee one! NHOwlet_IMG_7913-copy

Not only was it fascinating to see, it was amazing to hear all of the owlets squawking for food. There were four in total.

As I write today’s blog post I am reminded once again at how precious life is, and that without warning it can be taken away in a heartbeat. I was given nine days to observe and record the lives of these birds. In my 47 years, I have had countless opportunities to converse with people from all over the world. As some doors close and others open, the memories of good conversations and genuine people will always hold a special place in my heart!

The Beginning & the end

What an amazing opportunity I was given to have my work exhibited at the International Wolf Center in Ely for an entire year! That collection is only going to be up for another five weeks. Have you seen it?

Being in between program directors at the time the show was coming together, gave me the chance to have a little say in which pieces to use, and how they might be arranged. I studied up on how to put something like that together, but truly it was the culmination of a number of minds coming together that brought the exhibit to life!

I did however feel strongly that the first image presented should be 47 Years. Though not the first image ever made, to me it absolutely represents the beginning.

More often than not, when I head out to photograph the northern lights, I am first greeted by a large green bow stretching across the horizon. Those are not usually the images shared, as they do not hold as much interest as many of the others that follow that night. But, if I went back through the  years, there could be an entire album put together filled simply with green arcs stretching across the horizon.

47-Years_IMG_2696-copy

This night was my parent’s anniversary. A friend took me out to show me one of her favorite spots to see the lights dance, and I was given the perfect scene to create what I felt represented this incredible day. I composed the image to have the trees on either side represent my Mom and Dad. The bow that connected them was their love that held them together throughout the years. The beginning of what made our family, and continues to hold us strong! I truly do feel blessed to have been brought up in a home with two loving parents. I believe by example they have shared their values of marriage, and to this day, they enjoy spending time with each other. In the grand scheme of life, having someone to love, trust in, rely upon and be loved by, has to be one of the greatest gifts one can receive. I am fortunate to have that kind of relationship with my own husband as well!

Later that night my friend and I went out onto the lake and tried to hold up the bow as it was rising higher in the sky. Not having taken many “selfies” in general, I asked her to go out and get into position. After setting the timer I would run out and stand beside her. Pitch black and not wanting to turn on my headlamp, I didn’t realize she decided to stand on a large mound of snow, making my arrival a face plant next to her as the shutter released. We laughed hysterically as we still attempted to make the shot happen!

IMG_2706-copy

Second try we completely missed the bow.. and as luck would have it, third time was a charm!

Reaching-for-the-Light_IMG_2707-copy

Perhaps I should create an entire album of bloopers and missed shots!

As this Aurora! exhibition comes to a close, I will share a number of stories that happened the nights the images in the collection were made.

Star Trails and Lights

After five consecutive nights of shooting auroras, I’ve decided that it is probably in my best interest NOT to ever go to Alaska, Norway, or any of those other amazing places where you get to see the northern lights dance every night! Yowsa!

Being able to not only watch the lights dance before my eyes, but create unique compositions is something I’ve been striving for.

EdgeOfNight_IMG_1283-copy

Last night between pillar structures and various “blobs” of light filling the sky, I took advantage of the dark sky and went for the star trails image. With a good amount of geomagnetic energy out there, I was able to capture a nice amount of aurora glow along the horizon.

If you’re interested in learning more about night sky photography, come take a class! The International Wolf Center is offering a weekend workshop beginning April 17th. You can get more details here.

Frosty Faces

This past weekend proved to be a cold one! Sunday morning the temperature was -18˚F with whipping wind! I thought I was completely covered as I headed out to the start of the WolfTrack Classic Sled Dog Race in Ely, Minnesota. Apparently, the only thing showing were the apples of my cheeks, which became wind-burned before I even got to the gate. Only staying for a few minutes in the morning had me grin and bear the frigid conditions.

It’s always the end of the races that have me snapping the most images. The dogs are born to run and love it! The mushers know how to dress to stay warm. Though most cross the finish line with ice crystals adorning their smiles!

Ely ArtWalk

Looking for some great new artwork for your wall? Ely, Minnesota is the place to find what you’re looking for! The city’s Winter Festival is officially underway beginning today and running through February 15th.

Part of the festival includes the Ely ArtWalk where artists are encouraged to share their creative talents. Storefronts clear out their windows to make space for these works of art during the festival. Not all, but many of the pieces are for sale.

I got a sneak peek over the weekend of a young artist’s work. This will be her first time participating in the ArtWalk, and certainly not her last! I was immediately drawn to her sense of style and the meaning behind her pieces. I knew in an instant that I wanted them hanging on my office wall! You can view her artwork in the windows of the Goodwill store 40 N 2nd Avenue East. After the ArtWalk you will need to make an appointment with me, to see them in all of their glory!

These pieces represent the three stages of Inspiration.

Kristen-Williams-copy

This year I entered one piece into the ArtWalk. It will somehow be incorporated into the  new Raptor Exhibition at the International Wolf Center beginning this May. The nine days spent with a Northern Hawk Owl family has been a highlight of my photography career. I chose this owlet, peering out from its nest cavity to be my selection.

Hello_IMG_5987-copy

The piece has a custom-made frame by local artist, Barbara Jones. The frame is made up of wood harvested from her property and made to look like an extension of the of the image. You can view this piece in the window of Steger Mukluks 33 E. Sheridan Street during the ArtWalk.

A special thanks to Steve Voiles, Alanna Dore and everyone else who works tirelessly to pull this event together. It’s a winter favorite enjoyed by all!

Snow Sculpting Workshop

Saturday afternoon Chris Koivisto provided some hands-on instruction at the International Wolf Center for anyone wanting to learn more about the art of carving snow. Having a background that includes snow and ice carving, I was interested in taking a peek at what they were doing.

Since I also made myself available to talk about the Aurora! exhibition, I spent quite a bit of time chatting with folks from around the country who happened to stop in that day.

Here I am with my friends Susan and Wayne. They stopped in on their way home to Texas.Screen Shot 2015-02-01 at 12.54.04 PM
